How is this calculated?
  • Gold value = gold rate × weight
  • Making charge = % of gold value, or the fixed amount you enter
  • Wastage = % of gold value
  • GST = % of (gold value + making + wastage)
  • Each amount is rounded to 2 decimals, so the lines add up exactly to the total.
  • Jewellers may also charge for stones, hallmarking or certification — not included.

How gold prices work

Every country starts from the same international spot price, quoted in US dollars per troy ounce (31.1 g). It is converted to local currency, adjusted for purity, and then local import duty and tax are added.

In India, retail rates include a 15% import duty, and jewellers add 3% GST on top of the gold value and making charges. In the UAE, prices stay close to spot with 5% VAT on jewellery, while Qatar and Kuwait charge no VAT.

Your final bill also depends on the jeweller's making charges (typically 6–25%) and wastage. Use the calculator above with your jeweller's numbers to check a quote before you buy.

Frequently asked questions

How is the price of gold jewellery calculated?

Gold value (today's rate per gram × weight) plus the making charge (a percentage of the gold value or a fixed amount), plus wastage, and then tax on the total — 3% GST in India or 5% VAT in the UAE. Stones and hallmarking are charged separately.

What is the difference between 24K, 22K and 18K gold?

24K is 99.9% pure gold. 22K contains 91.67% gold and is the most common for Indian jewellery. 18K contains 75% gold and is used for stone-set and lighter jewellery. Their prices follow the same ratio.

Why is gold cheaper in Dubai and the Gulf than in India?

Gulf prices stay close to the international spot price, with low or no tax on jewellery (5% VAT in the UAE, none in Qatar or Kuwait). India adds a 15% import duty (since May 2026) and 3% GST, so Indian retail rates are noticeably higher.

How much gold can I bring to India duty-free?

Passengers who have lived abroad for one year or more can bring gold jewellery duty-free: up to 20 grams for men and 40 grams for women. Gold bars and coins have no duty-free allowance. Rules change, so check the latest CBIC baggage rules before travelling.

How often are the gold prices updated?

International prices update twice a day, at 10:00 and 18:00 India time, and the page checks for new prices every few minutes while it is open. Indian city rates come from live retail feeds and international prices from the global spot market, converted at daily exchange rates.
